The moon, a sliver of bone in the inky sky, offered little comfort as it cast long, distorted shadows across Granny Mama's garden. Inside, the air, usually thick with the sweet scent of baking bread and lavender, now crackled with an unfamiliar, chilling tension. Granny Mama, her heart a sudden, frantic drum against her ribs, sat bolt upright in her armchair. The soft glow of her reading lamp, a familiar beacon of warmth, now seemed to illuminate the intrusion with stark, unwelcome clarity.

The splintering of wood echoed through the quiet cottage, a brutal sound that tore through the stillness. It was a sound of violation, of something precious being broken. Granny Mama’s hand, usually so gentle as it tended her roses or smoothed a child’s hair, clenched into a tight fist. Her eyes, usually twinkling with amusement, were wide and fixed on the hallway, where the shadows seemed to deepen and coalesce into menacing shapes.

They were here. The ones from the whispers, the ones who brought fear.

The intruders moved with a clumsy, violent haste, their heavy boots thudding on the worn floorboards. Their faces, when they were briefly illuminated by the weak moonlight filtering through the windows, were grim masks of greed, their eyes darting around the room, searching for the treasures Granny Mama held so dear. They were not looking for a kind word or a warm embrace; they were looking for things, for objects to hoard and sell, oblivious to the stories
