The roar of the crowd, once a distant echo, now felt like a physical presence, a tidal wave that threatened to pull Alex under. Every dribble, every shot, every pass was scrutinized, dissected, and amplified. The whispers in the hallways had morphed into pronouncements, each one a brick in the towering edifice of expectation. He was no longer just Alex, the quiet kid who loved the feel of the ball in his hands. He was "the kid," "the phenom," "the future." And the weight of it all was becoming a suffocating blanket.

He’d started avoiding the usual after-school hangouts, the easy camaraderie of his teammates feeling strained, their admiration tinged with a new kind of awe that made him uncomfortable. Mark, especially, seemed to orbit him now, a mix of respect and something else he couldn’t quite decipher – a flicker of envy, perhaps, or a silent challenge. Coach Miller’s encouraging words, once a balm, now felt like another layer of pressure, another reminder of the impossible heights he was supposed to reach.
