The squeak of sneakers on polished hardwood had become the soundtrack to Alex’s life. It was a familiar rhythm, a comforting pulse that had, in just a few short weeks, woven itself into the very fabric of his existence. The air in the gymnasium, usually thick with the scent of sweat and Pledge, now seemed to hum with a different kind of energy, an electric current sparked by the unexpected brilliance unfolding on the court. Alex, the quiet kid who’d once blended into the background like a shadow, was now the undisputed sun around which the team, and increasingly, the town, revolved.

It had started subtly, a ripple that quickly swelled into a wave. The early games, the ones Coach Miller had described as “tune-ups,” had been Alex’s proving ground. They had spilled out into the hallways, echoing in the locker room, and were now finding their way onto the pages of the local newspaper. Under the headline, "Miller's Marvel: Freshman Sensation Takes Courts by Storm," a grainy photo of Alex mid-air, defying gravity, graced the sports section. The article, penned by a reporter named Brenda Jenkins, spoke of his "preternatural talent," his "court awareness beyond his years," and the "electrifying energy" he brought to the game.
