The air in Elara’s small study felt thick, heavy with unspoken questions and the lingering scent of old paper. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, cast long, accusing shadows across the worn mahogany desk where Elara and Ben pored over the scattered documents. They had spent hours sifting through the remnants of her late husband’s affairs, a task that felt both sacred and deeply unsettling. But Elara’s quiet distress had chipped away at his skepticism. He saw the genuine pain in her eyes, the way her unwavering faith, a beacon for so many, seemed to be flickering under the relentless onslaught. “Let’s look at who he was dealing with,” he suggested, his voice a low rumble. “Who were his partners? His rivals?”
