The cardboard box sat in the corner of Maya’s new room, a silent sentinel against the pastel-colored walls. It was a stark contrast to the carefully curated space the Millers had prepared for her, a space filled with plush throws and framed prints of serene landscapes. This box, however, was hers. It was a tangible piece of a life that felt both impossibly distant and achingly close. For days, she’d circled it, her fingers tracing the faded shipping labels, her mind a whirlwind of what ifs and should haves. Today, though, felt different. A quiet resolve had settled within her, a flicker of the bravery her mother had always possessed.

She knelt before the box, the worn cardboard cool beneath her knees. With a deep breath, Maya lifted the lid. The scent of aged paper and something faintly floral, like dried lavender, wafted out. It was the smell of her mother. Inside, a jumble of memories lay waiting. There were sketchbooks filled with quick, vibrant drawings of birds in flight and whimsical flowers. There were letters, tied with frayed ribbon, the ink a deep blue against cream-colored paper. And nestled amongst them, a small, smooth stone, painted with a tiny, perfect ladybug. Maya picked it up, its weight comforting in her palm. Her mother had given her this stone when she was very small, telling her it held a wish.

She carefully untied one of the ribbons and unfolded the first letter. Her mother’s handwriting, elegant and looping, filled the page. It wasn't a diary entry, but a letter addressed to Maya, even though Maya wouldn’t have been able to read it at the time.
