The quiet held for a single, stretched second. Then the button in Lina’s hand began to hum, a low note like a refrigerator’s drone, but deeper, as if it were coming from the earth itself. The hum vibrated up her arm, into her teeth, and she felt the world around her tremble in response.
The upside-down furniture in Leo’s room shivered. The floating couch dropped to the floor with a thud that shook the dust from the ceiling. The toy dog with the mismatched button eyes spat out a strip of paper, like a receipt from a grocery store. Leo picked it up. The paper was covered in tiny, perfect letters, each one a different color, as if they’d been printed by a rainbow that had forgotten its manners.
“It says something about a birthday,” Leo said, his voice flat. “Gimtadienis. But not a party. It says gimtadienis is the day the walls remember their names.”
