Chapter 4
The Tiny Culprit's Confession
Toons finally corners the 'thief' – a tiny, hungry mouse! The mouse, overwhelmed by the delicious scent of Giggleberry Jam, mistook the shiny Golden Spoon for a giant pretzel. Toons realizes this isn't a malicious crime, just a case of mistaken identity.
The air in the Giggleberry Jam Festival grounds buzzed with a frantic energy that was entirely out of sync with the usual joyous hum. Toons the red fox, his tail twitching with a mixture of concern and a rumbling in his stomach (he hadn't had a proper donut all morning), surveyed the scene. Giggle, the pink elephant, was wringing her considerable trunk, her large eyes watering. "Oh, Detective Toons! It's terrible, simply dreadful! The Golden Spoon! Gone! Poof! Vanished like a whisper on a gentle breeze!"
Toons patted her arm with a paw that felt far too small for the job. "Now, now, Giggle. Let's not get our frosting in a twist. We'll find this spoon. It's just a matter of following the… uh… sticky situation." He gestured vaguely at the jam-splattered path. The trail of sticky footprints, which Barnaby had so helpfully pointed out in the previous chapter, led them in a rather zig-zaggy fashion towards the less-trafficked edges of the festival. It was less a trail and more a series of enthusiastic splatters, as if someone had been dancing their way through the jam.
They followed the glistening evidence past a stall selling suspiciously wobbly jelly sculptures and a tent where a badger, who claimed to be the world's foremost expert on competitive acorn-hiding, was loudly boasting about his "unshakeable alibi" involving a very important nap. Toons had already interviewed the badger, whose alibi consisted of snoring so loudly it could be heard across the county. Not exactly ironclad.
