Chapter 4
A Fallen Bite
Adam, faced with the forbidden fruit in Eve's hand, made his own choice. Together, they partook, a shared act of defiance. In that instant, their world shifted, and a new awareness, sharp and unsettling, dawned upon them.
The air in Eden, once a balm, now felt thin, almost brittle. Sunlight, which had always seemed to cradle them in its warmth, now struck with an alien intensity, illuminating not beauty, but a stark, exposed reality. Adam stood where he had always stood, near the heart of the garden, but the familiar contours of Eve’s form, so recently a source of comfort and wonder, now pricked at his senses with an unfamiliar sharpness. He saw her not as the companion God had fashioned for him, but as something… other.
She held the fruit, a deep, alluring crimson, its skin still slick with the dew that had once seemed so pure. It was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, the one tree God had pointed to, the one tree that stood apart, a silent sentinel in their otherwise boundless domain. Everything else was a testament to God’s boundless generosity. But now, Eve’s gaze, fixed on the fruit, held a new, unsettling intensity.
“Adam,” she whispered, her voice a tremor that resonated deep within him. It was not the voice he knew, the one that sang with the joy of discovery, but a voice laced with a strange, burgeoning hunger. She extended her hand, the fruit a dark promise against the vibrant green of Eden. He saw the faint sheen of juice on her lips, the way her eyes held a mixture of triumph and something akin to fear. He knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, what this moment meant.
