Chapter 4
The Field of Blood
Ignoring the divine plea, Cain lures Abel to a desolate field. Jealousy and rage erupt, silencing Abel's life with a single Strike. A brother's blood stains the earth, and a dark secret is born.
The sun, a molten eye in the sky, beat down upon the parched earth. Cain wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, his gaze fixed on the distant, shimmering horizon. The soil beneath his calloused hands was stubborn, yielding its bounty grudgingly, a constant testament to his labor. He turned a clod of dirt, his thoughts a tangled mess of frustration and a gnawing unease that had settled in his gut like a stone. Beside him, the gentle bleating of sheep was a stark contrast to the rasp of his own breath. Abel, his younger brother, moved among the flock with a quiet grace, his hands gentle as he tended to the newborn lambs. There was a serenity about Abel, a luminescence that Cain could not fathom, and increasingly, could not bear.
It had begun subtly, as most insidious things do. A shared meal, a hushed conversation under the vast, star-dusted canvas of night. But beneath the surface of brotherly camaraderie, a current of unspoken rivalry had begun to flow, a silent competition for a favor they both craved but could not define. Cain, with his sweat and toil, wrestled with the earth, coaxing life from its reluctant embrace. He offered the first fruits of his labor, the plump grains and the sun-ripened fruits, a testament to his strength and perseverance. He had poured his heart into those offerings, a desperate plea for recognition, for a sign that his efforts were seen, valued.
Abel, on the other hand, presented a different kind of gift. He brought forth the choicest portions of his flock, the fat from the firstborn, their wool still soft with the dew of morning. There was a purity in Abel’s offerings, a simple, unadorned devotion that seemed to resonate with an unseen force. Cain watched, a knot tightening in his chest, as the divine acceptance settled upon his brother’s gifts like a gentle mist. A warmth, a light, an acknowledgment that Cain, no matter how hard he toiled, could not seem to command.
