The clang of steel on steel, a familiar symphony to General Julius, echoed through the training yards. Sweat beaded on the brows of his soldiers, their movements sharp and precise under the unforgiving midday sun. Yet, beneath the disciplined facade, a gnawing disquiet stirred within him. He watched them, these men who had bled and fought beside him, their loyalty to the crown absolute, but their bellies were growing leaner, their boots thinner. King Chrisias, lost in his celestial communion, seemed oblivious to the physical needs of the kingdom he was sworn to protect.

Julius ran a gauntleted hand over his grizzled beard. For weeks, he had been orchestrating a delicate dance, a charade of unwavering loyalty while secretly laying the groundwork for a storm he felt was inevitable. The King’s pronouncements, each more detached from the practicalities of governance than the last, had not gone unnoticed by the populace. Whispers, once confined to the shadowed corners of taverns, were now beginning to ripple through the marketplace, tinged with frustration and a growing fear.

He signaled to Captain Titus, a man whose weathered face mirrored Julius’s own blend of stoicism and weariness. Titus approached, his salute crisp.
