Chapter 19
The King's Choice
With the kingdom in chaos, the King is forced to confront the reality of his actions. He must choose between his perceived divine calling and the desperate pleas of his people, with Cestro's influence waning.
The air in the throne room, once thick with the scent of polished wood and royal decree, now carried the acrid tang of fear and desperation. Outside, the clamor of the city, a symphony of discontent that had been building for weeks, had finally erupted into a full-blown roar. King Chrisias, his face a mask of profound, almost otherworldly calm, sat upon his throne, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond the vaulted ceilings, beyond the very fabric of the world he ruled. The embroidered cushions beneath him seemed to absorb the tremors of the city’s rage, muffling the sounds of a kingdom teetering on the precipice.

The granaries are empty. The streets are filled with the cries of the hungry and the angry.”
Chrisias’s eyes, the color of a stormy sea, finally drifted down, though they did not truly meet hers. They seemed to look through her, as if she were merely another obstacle in his divinely ordained path. “The Lord provides, Berenike,” he said, his voice soft, almost a whisper, yet carrying an unnerving conviction. “He tests our faith. We must remain steadfast.”
