The heavy scent of beeswax and ancient parchment hung thick in the air of Queen Berenike’s private chambers, a comforting aroma that usually soothed her restless spirit. Tonight, however, it did little to quell the gnawing anxiety that had taken root deep within her. Rain lashed against the high-arched windows, each gust of wind sounding like a mournful sigh from the kingdom itself. She traced the intricate embroidery on a tapestry depicting a victorious battle, her fingers finding no solace in the familiar threads. Her gaze drifted to a small, locked chest tucked away in a shadowed corner, a repository of secrets that had become both her burden and her only hope.

It had begun with a misplaced scroll, a minor oversight by one of Cestro’s devoted scribes. The prince, in his zealous haste to bolster the King’s latest decree – a decree that would divert precious grain reserves to the construction of a new, grandiose temple – had accidentally left behind a sheaf of his personal notes. Berenike, ever vigilant, had found them tucked beneath a stack of royal pronouncements destined for the King’s signature. At first, she had dismissed them as the ramblings of a man consumed by faith, but a single phrase, scrawled in Cestro’s distinctive, angular hand, had snagged her attention: "The Lord’s will is malleable, a river to be guided toward the sea of His glory."

Malleable? The word echoed in her mind, a jarring dissonance against the unwavering certainty she had always associated with divine pronouncements. Cestro, the King’s most trusted spiritual advisor, the man who interpreted the very breath of God for Chrisias, had penned such a blasphemous thought? A prickle of unease, the same unease that had shadowed her since Chrisias’s obsession with the divine began, intensified. She had, with trembling hands, begun to examine the notes more closely, comparing the prince’s interpretations with the ancient texts she kept hidden, texts Chrisias himself deemed too worldly for his current spiritual pursuits.
