The air on Kaelen Prime thrummed with a tension as palpable as the static before a lightning strike. Dust devils, kicked up by the relentless, twin suns, danced across the cracked ochre plains, mirroring the unease that coiled in Delan’s gut. Beside him, Lyra’s hand, cool and steady, rested on his arm. He could feel the faint pulse beneath her skin, a quiet rhythm against the growing cacophony of his own racing heart. They were here for the first artifact, the Whispering Orb, a relic whispered to hold the secrets of cosmic silence, capable of snuffing out stars with a mere thought. And, as always, General Vorlag’s shadow loomed.

“They’re close,” Lyra murmured, her gaze sweeping across the jagged horizon. Her eyes, the color of a twilight sky just before the stars ignite, held a preternatural sharpness, a depth that still both fascinated and unnerved Delan. He’d learned to trust that gaze, to lean into the quiet certainty it projected, a stark contrast to the swirling confusion that often plagued his own mind.

“How close?” Delan asked, his voice a low rasp. He adjusted the grip on his pulse rifle, the familiar weight a small comfort. The sleek, utilitarian design felt worlds away from the ancient, terrifying power they sought.
