Chapter 9: The Hill
The group navigates the silent city toward the old hospital, following the pull of Samira's key. They encounter a barricade of abandoned cars and a fresh sign of the creatures, forcing a detour through a collapsed building. Inside, they discover a journal that reveals the hospital's basement was a research site for a failed experiment involving sound frequencies. The key's warmth intensifies as they near the hospital, and they arrive to find the front doors wide open and a faint, rhythmic pulse coming from inside.
The air outside the church was cold and still. Samira stood on the cracked steps, the stone key warm in her palm. The city stretched before them, gray and empty, the buildings like tombstones. The wind carried the smell of rain, but no rain fell. The silence pressed against them, thick as wool.
“Which way?” Garcia asked, her shotgun cradled in her arms.
Samira turned slowly, letting the key guide her. The pull was steady, tugging east, toward the hill where the old hospital sat. “That way. Three blocks, Elena said.”
