Chapter 17: The Golden Crack
In the aftermath of Chloe's sacrifice, the group faces a new crack in the cavern floor spilling warm golden light. Samira's mark burns as they descend into a small chamber where a pedestal holds a bowl of black water. A voice demands the truth of the covenant, and Samira must decide what to reveal.
The silence in the cavern was heavier than the hum had been. Samira stared at Chloe’s body on the shore, the golden glow fading from her skin. The disc had sunk into the lake, swallowed by the black water. The figure was gone. The hum was gone. Only the crack at Samira’s feet remained, spilling warm light upward.
Amir’s hand found hers. “Sam.”
She looked down. The mark on her palm still glowed, a faint gold against her skin. The warmth was not painful, but it pulsed in time with the light from the crack.
