Chapter 14: The Reckoning of Truth
The group descends the green-lit staircase into a deeper chamber, where the voice reveals it has been speaking to Chloe all along. Chloe admits she heard the voice before the rapture and kept it secret, believing she was chosen. The voice demands a choice: Chloe must take her role or Samira must pay for her silence.
The silence pressed down like a weight. Samira’s ears rang from the thunder of the gate closing, and the absence of the hum felt almost as loud. She stood at the edge of the new staircase, the pale green light spilling upward like breath. Behind her, the others were still, their faces pale in the dim glow.
“We keep going,” Samira said again, more to herself than to them. She placed her foot on the first step. The stone was cold, damp. It did not crumble.
One by one, they followed. Amir held her hand, his fingers cold. Chloe came next, her notepad clutched to her chest. Liam walked with his jaw tight, his eyes scanning the walls. Marcus kept his hand on the stone, muttering measurements. Elena and Garcia brought up the rear, their footsteps echoing in the narrow shaft.
