The creatures scrabbled at the tunnel entrance, their claws scraping stone. Samira’s hand throbbed, the crescent mark pulsing like a second heartbeat. The second key sat on the stone pedestal, glowing faintly, and behind it the smaller gate shimmered, a dark mirror of the first.
“What price?” Samira shouted into the echoing chamber. The figure’s laugh faded, replaced by a dry whisper that seemed to come from the walls themselves.
“The first gate demanded a body. This one demands a voice. A memory. A piece of who you are. Place the key, and the gate will take something precious from you. Something you cannot get back.”
