The air in the village square, usually thick with the scent of drying figs and the murmur of familiar voices, buzzed with a different kind of energy. A carriage, grander than any seen in years, had rumbled into their quiet corner of the world, its wheels kicking up a fine, golden dust. From it emerged a gentleman, not like the rough-hewn farmers or the weathered fishermen, but someone who carried himself with an air of quiet authority, his tweed jacket a stark contrast to the simple linen shirts of the villagers. Elena saw Isabella watching, a familiar spark of yearning in her eyes. She beckoned her over, her smile warm and knowing. “Isabella, come. Perhaps Monsieur Dubois would be interested in the fruits of our land.”
