Why did the stray cat, with its matted fur and pleading eyes, have to go hungry? Why did her best friend, Maya, have to move away just when their games of make-believe were at their most exciting? Why did the sky sometimes weep without warning, drenching everything in a cold sadness? These ‘whys’ tumbled around in Elara’s head like pebbles in a tin can, clattering and echoing, never settling. She felt small and insignificant, a tiny boat tossed about on a vast, unpredictable ocean.
One afternoon, after a particularly long and disheartening day where her favorite flower in the garden had wilted overnight, Elara found herself curled up on the worn rug in her bedroom.
