The afternoon sun cast long, playful shadows across the meadow as Elara sat with her friends, Maya and Leo. They were usually full of giggles and chatter, but today, a quiet mood had settled over them. Leo was tracing patterns in the dust with a stick, his brow furrowed, while Maya was picking at a loose thread on her dress, her gaze distant. Elara knew that feeling well – the heavy blanket of "why?" that sometimes descended, making everything seem a little dimmer.

“What’s wrong?” Elara asked softly, her voice barely disturbing the peaceful hum of the bees in the nearby clover. She remembered how, not so long ago, she would have kept such questions locked inside, afraid they were too silly or too big. But now, a gentle warmth bloomed in her chest, a quiet knowing that made speaking her heart feel safe.

Leo sighed, a small puff of air that stirred the dust. “I just… I don’t understand why Mrs. Gable’s cat ran away. He was always so happy here. And why did my grandpa get sick?” His stick stopped its tracing, hovering over a particularly intricate swirl. “It doesn’t seem fair.”
