The silk felt foreign against my skin, a whisper of luxury I still wasn't sure I deserved. It was a blush pink slip, cool and impossibly smooth, a stark contrast to the rough, scratchy fabrics I’d grown accustomed to. Julian had simply placed it on my bed, a silent offering after I’d confessed my wardrobe consisted of threadbare, hand-me-down rags that smelled faintly of damp pavement. The world of letters, once a distant, unattainable realm, was slowly opening up to me. I devoured the stories, the facts, the sheer power of language. Mrs. Gable, sensing my eagerness, would often pause, her eyes twinkling. “You have a natural aptitude, Elara,” she’d say. “A keen mind.” High praise, coming from someone who clearly knew minds.
