The ballroom shimmered, a sea of silk and jewels, a stark contrast to the rough burlap that had been my constant companion for so long. Tonight, I wore a gown the color of moonlight, a whisper of a thing that clung to me like a second skin, embroidered with tiny pearls that caught the light with every breath I took. Julian had chosen it, of course. Everything in this new life was Julian. He stood beside me, his hand a warm, steady weight on the small of my back, a quiet anchor in the churning tide of faces.

"You look breathtaking, Elara," he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through me. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, held a warmth that always made my heart flutter like a trapped bird.

I managed a smile, though my stomach was a nervous knot. This was it. The Vance Industries annual gala. A gathering of the city's elite, the people whose lives seemed to exist on a different plane than the one I’d known. Julian had insisted I attend, not just as his guest, but as his companion, his… partner. The word still felt foreign, too grand, too fragile to hold.
