The air in the Vance mansion, once thick with the scent of old money and hushed secrets, now hummed with a different kind of energy – a vibrant, chaotic symphony of wedding preparations. Seamstresses, their fingers flying with impossible speed, darted around me, a whirlwind of silks, laces, and delicate embroidery. My wedding dress, a creation so ethereal it felt woven from moonlight and dreams, lay spread across a vast table, waiting for its final fittings. It was a far cry from the threadbare rags that had once been my only possession.

“Elara, darling, this shade of ivory is simply divine on you!” Mrs. Albright, Julian’s aunt and the self-appointed queen of his social calendar, declared, her voice a tinkling bell. She clutched a swatch of fabric, her eyes, sharp and appraising, scanning me from head to toe. I offered a hesitant smile, still not entirely accustomed to such effusive praise, or indeed, to being the center of such attention.

“Thank you, Mrs. Albright,” I murmured, trying to project a confidence I didn’t always feel. The sheer opulence of it all, the endless stream of people catering to my every whim, still felt like a dream I might wake from at any moment. My past, a constant, gnawing presence, whispered doubts in my ear: *This isn't for you. You don't belong here. They'll see through you.*
