The silk of the gown felt alien against my skin, a whisper of luxury I still wasn’t entirely accustomed to. It was a deep emerald, a shade that mirrored the lush gardens visible through the sprawling windows of Julian’s estate, a world away from the grimy cobblestones I’d once called home. Tonight, however, felt different. The usual gnawing anxiety, the fear that I was an imposter in this life, a stray dog in a palace, had receded. It wasn’t gone, not entirely, but it was quieter, a distant hum instead of a deafening roar.

Julian had invited a select group of his closest associates and friends for a private dinner. I’d spent hours in front of the vanity, my fingers tracing the unfamiliar contours of my face, trying to convince myself that the woman staring back was worthy of being by his side. My dress, a gift from him, was exquisite, but it was the simple silver locket he’d placed around my neck earlier that day that held more significance. Inside, nestled against smooth velvet, was a tiny, intricately carved hummingbird. “A symbol of resilience and joy,” he’d explained, his eyes holding mine. “For you.” It was a gesture so tender, so utterly unexpected, that it had chipped away another piece of my ingrained disbelief.

As I descended the grand staircase, the murmur of conversation stilled. Heads turned, and for a fleeting moment, the old panic flared. I felt the weight of their gazes, the silent judgment. But then I saw Julian at the foot of the stairs, his smile widening as he met my eyes. That smile was my anchor. He extended his hand, and as I took it, a wave of warmth washed over me.
