The silk of the gown felt impossibly soft against my skin, a stark contrast to the rough burlap and worn denim that had been my uniform for so long. It was a deep sapphire, the color of the twilight sky just before the stars blinked to life, and it flowed around me like liquid moonlight. I’d spent weeks, perhaps months now, in this new world Julian had so graciously offered me, and still, moments like these, catching my reflection in a hallway mirror or feeling the delicate weave of a tablecloth, sent a tremor of disbelief through me.

Today was a ball, a grand affair hosted by Julian’s company to celebrate some milestone I’d only half-understood. The ballroom, when I’d peeked in earlier, was a dizzying spectacle of glittering chandeliers, swirling gowns, and the murmur of a hundred conversations. It was a world away from the hushed scrape of my own footsteps on cold pavement, the desperate plea caught in my throat.

Julian had been watching me. I felt it, a subtle pressure, a familiar warmth that settled behind my eyes. He stood across the room, a pillar of effortless grace in his tailored suit, talking to a group of important-looking people. His gaze, when it found mine, was a silent question, a gentle reassurance. *Are you alright?* it asked. *You’re doing wonderfully.*
