The silence in Julian’s study was a different kind of quiet than the hushed reverence of his mansion. Here, surrounded by leather-bound books that spoke of a lifetime of learning and polished mahogany that gleamed with a history of power, the silence felt… personal. He had led me here after dinner, the clinking of silverware and the murmured conversations of the staff fading into a soft hum as we ascended the grand staircase. My heart still thrummed with a nervous energy, a constant companion since I’d stepped out of the alleyways and into this world of unimaginable luxury. Yet, with Julian, a strange peace had begun to settle, a fragile seedling pushing through the hardened earth of my past.

He gestured to a plush armchair, its velvet worn smooth in places, as if countless conversations had been held here. I sank into it, the fabric a welcome contrast to the cold, unforgiving pavement I knew so well. Julian, instead of taking his usual commanding position behind his desk, chose a chair opposite me, closer, more on my level. The dim light of a single desk lamp cast long shadows, softening the sharp angles of his face, making him seem less like the formidable CEO and more like… a man.

He poured two glasses of amber liquid, the rich scent of aged whiskey filling the air. He offered me one, and though I’d never had a drink in my life, I nodded. The glass felt cool and substantial in my hand, a small anchor in the vastness of his world. He took a sip, his gaze fixed on me, not with the intense scrutiny he often employed in business, but with a gentle, searching quality.
