Chapter 10
The Weight of Secrets
Elara grapples with the truth of her family's cruelty. The shame and anger threaten to consume her. She confides in Julian, sharing the darkest parts of her past, hoping for understanding, not rejection.
The silk of the sheets felt like a foreign language against my skin, a language of comfort and safety that I was still, after weeks, struggling to decipher. Julian had given me this room, this sanctuary, a world away from the biting wind and gnawing hunger that had been my constant companions. Yet, even here, surrounded by opulence I could once only dream of, a chill seeped into my bones, a cold that had nothing to do with the temperature. It was the chill of remembrance, of truths unearthed, of a past I'd tried so desperately to bury.
The previous day had been a maelstrom. The solicitor’s visit, meant to be a simple formality regarding some minor inheritance from a distant relative, had instead ripped open old wounds with brutal efficiency. Letters, dusty and forgotten, had been unearthed. Letters from my mother, written years ago, detailing her disgust, her shame, her absolute conviction that I was a burden, a stain on their pristine existence. They hadn't just kicked me out; they had actively disowned me, celebrated my absence, and wished me nothing but ill fortune. The words, stark and cruel, had echoed in the quiet of Julian’s library, each syllable a fresh stab.
I’d fled, a choked sob escaping my lips, and found myself in Julian’s study, my carefully constructed composure shattering like glass. He’d found me there, my face buried in my hands, the dam of my carefully held-back emotions finally breaking. He hadn't recoiled, hadn't judged. He’d simply sat beside me, his presence a steady anchor in my storm, and waited. Waited for me to find the words, for the deluge of tears to subside.
