The Unraveling

The air in the small apartment was thick, not just with the stale scent of cigarette smoke and cheap perfume, but with a suffocating tension that had become Nika’s constant companion. It clung to the peeling wallpaper, seeped from the cracks in the linoleum, and settled deep in her chest, a dull ache that never quite subsided.
