The world, once a canvas of muted colors, began to shimmer with an unsettling vibrancy. It wasn’t the vibrant hue of joy, but rather the garish, almost desperate glow of a neon sign flickering in the darkness. My childhood memories, like old photographs faded by time, held a certain softness, a gentle melancholy. But the present was a sharp, insistent ache, a discord that vibrated deep within my bones. I was Nika, yes, but Nika felt like a borrowed name, a costume I’d put on for a play I didn’t fully understand. The script was vague, the lines often felt rehearsed, and the applause, when it came, felt hollow.

There was a constant hum beneath the surface of my days, a low-grade anxiety that I’d learned to live with, much like one learns to live with a persistent headache. It was the feeling of being perpetually out of sync, of moving through life with a slight lag, always a beat behind the rhythm everyone else seemed to effortlessly follow. I’d tried to bridge that gap, to find a place where I fit, where the edges of my being didn't snag on the sharp corners of the world. I’d chased experiences, hoping they’d fill the void, hoping some external validation would finally make me feel whole. I’d dated men who promised excitement, who swirled around me like a vibrant storm, their energy a stark contrast to the quietude I’d always known. And then, there was him.

He was a whirlwind, a force of nature that swept me off my feet. His charm was a silken trap, his attention a potent elixir. He saw me, or at least, he *seemed* to see me, in a way no one else had. He amplified my strengths, or so I thought, and smoothed over my perceived flaws with honeyed words. But beneath the polished veneer, a dark current ran, a possessiveness that began to feel less like adoration and more like ownership. His gaze could turn from adoration to ice in an instant, his moods shifting like the wind, leaving me constantly on edge, trying to predict the next gust, trying to stay upright.
