Chapter 16
The Dawn of Nikki
The transformation from Nika to Nikki solidifies. She embraces her authentic identity, shedding the weight of past trauma and stepping into her empowered self.
The shift wasn't a sudden lightning strike, nor a gentle unfurling of petals. It was more like the slow, deliberate turning of a planet, a fundamental reorientation that happened so gradually I barely noticed it until the sun was shining from a completely new direction. For so long, I’d been Nika, a name that felt like a borrowed coat, a little too big, a little too drab. It was the name I’d answered to, the name my mother had given me, the name etched onto the certificates that felt increasingly irrelevant. But somewhere along the winding path I’d been treading, a new name had begun to whisper at the edges of my awareness: Nikki.
Nikki. It felt like a secret, a private joke I was finally ready to share with myself. It was lighter, brighter, with a playful lilt that Nika lacked. It was the sound of someone who wasn’t afraid to laugh too loudly, to dance a little off-beat, to wear a color that demanded attention. It was the sound of someone who was, finally, undeniably, me.
The journey from Nika to Nikki had been a messy, arduous one, littered with the debris of past selves. There were the Nika’s who’d desperately sought approval, who’d contorted themselves into shapes they thought others would admire. There was the Nika who’d been so lost in the haze of addiction, her own reflection a stranger. And, most painfully, there was the Nika who’d been so consumed by the narcissistic storm of my former boyfriend, her own voice silenced to a mere echo. He had a way of chipping away at your foundation, making you doubt the very ground you stood on, until all that remained was the hollow shell he’d constructed. I remembered those days with a shiver, a phantom ache in my soul. The way he’d twist my words, make me feel like I was always the one in the wrong, even when I knew, deep down, that I wasn't. It was a slow, insidious erosion of self, and I’d almost let him succeed.
