The air in the room felt thick, heavy with the unspoken, with the ghosts of arguments and the stale scent of denial. It was a familiar weight, one I’d carried for so long it had become a second skin, or rather, a skin I was desperately trying to shed. This was it, the precipice. The decision, once a terrifying abyss, now felt like a necessary descent. I looked at him, really looked at him, not through the fog of affection or the haze of addiction, but with a clarity that felt both brutal and freeing. His charm, once a dazzling cloak, now looked like cheap imitation fabric, fraying at the edges, revealing the emptiness beneath.

“I can’t do this anymore,” I said, the words surprisingly steady. They weren’t shouted, not even a plea. They were a simple statement of fact, like declaring the sky was blue or that the tide was going out.

He blinked, a flicker of surprise, quickly replaced by that practiced, dismissive smile. “Can’t do what, baby? We’re fine.”
