The sterile scent of antiseptic and old paper hung in the air, a strangely comforting perfume that clung to the hushed rooms where broken pieces were carefully reassembled. Chapter 10, I called it in my mind, though the real chapter numbers were scrawled in neat, impersonal print on the outside of folders. This was the chapter where the silences began to break, where the words I’d swallowed for so long started to find their way out. This was the chapter of finding my voice.

It began with Agnes, a woman whose gentle eyes held the quiet wisdom of someone who had seen it all and survived. Her office was a testament to that survival – a riot of colorful cushions on a worn leather sofa, stacks of books that promised escape and insight, and a small, potted plant that seemed to defy the gloom with its persistent green. I’d walked in there a ghost, a collection of anxieties and shame, barely able to meet her gaze. The first few sessions were a blur of stammered confessions, of words that felt foreign and clumsy on my tongue. I spoke of him, the shadow that had loomed so large, of the insidious way he’d chipped away at my self-worth until I was a hollow shell. I spoke of the haze of addiction, the desperate attempt to numb a pain I couldn’t articulate.

“It’s okay, Nika,” Agnes would say, her voice a balm. “Take your time. There’s no rush here.”
