The air in Kabelo’s small, mud-brick dwelling was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and unspoken words. Outside, the African sun beat down with its usual relentless intensity, but within these four walls, a different kind of heat simmered – the friction of conviction against caution. Kabelo sat on a low stool, his gaze fixed on the intricate patterns woven into a worn rug at his feet. Across from him, his elder, a man whose face was a roadmap of years etched with both wisdom and worry, sat in silent judgment.

“You speak of fire, Kabelo,” the elder finally said, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. “But fire consumes. It does not build.”

Kabelo’s jaw tightened. He knew this conversation was inevitable. He had been careful, so careful, to shield his grandmother from the full extent of his activities, but his elder, his uncle, was a man who saw through the thinnest of veils. “We need to burn away the rot, Uncle,” Kabelo replied, his voice steady, though a tremor of frustration ran beneath it. “The colonial structures that choke us, the laws that bind us. They offer no room for growth, only for decay.”
