Chapter 12
Davies' Desperation
Inspector Davies, fearing the loss of his financial stake in colonial exploitation, resorts to increasingly desperate and aggressive tactics to suppress dissent and obstruct Eleanor's work.
The air in Inspector Davies' office hung thick and stale, a miasma of cigar smoke and the cloying scent of cheap disinfectant. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that dared to penetrate the grimy window, illuminating the grim tableau of a man teetering on the precipice of losing everything. Davies, his face a mask of strained composure, tapped a restless rhythm on the polished mahogany desk with a signet ring that glinted dully. His eyes, usually sharp and assessing, now held a frantic glint, a desperate animal cornered.
He hated this feeling. This gnawing uncertainty that gnawed at the edges of his carefully constructed world. For years, he had held the reins, a benevolent, if firm, shepherd guiding his flock of unsuspecting natives. She was the burr under his saddle, the persistent itch he couldn't scratch. Every question she asked, every hushed conversation she managed to overhear, felt like another crack in the dam he had so meticulously built.
He picked up a file, its cover worn smooth from countless hours of examination. "Project Chimera," it read. A euphemism, he knew, for the intricate web of resource extraction and land acquisition that lined his pockets and those of men far more powerful than himself. This was what was at stake. Not just his career, but his comfort, his legacy. He couldn’t let some idealistic journalist, some… *woman*, unravel it all with her ink-stained fingers and insatiable curiosity.
