The afternoon sun, usually a relentless force in my downtown office, felt softer today, filtering through the blinds in gentle, dusty beams. It was a rare quiet moment, a pause between the thunderous roar of quarterly reports and the clamor of impending international deals. My mind, however, wasn’t entirely on spreadsheets. It was on Amelia. And, more recently, on the small, vibrant force that anchored her world. Leo.

I’d seen him before, of course, glimpses of him in photos on Amelia’s phone, a bright spark in her otherwise private universe. But today was different. Today, he was here, in the hushed elegance of my penthouse apartment, a place usually reserved for solitary contemplation or the occasional, sterile business dinner. Amelia had suggested it, a neutral territory, she’d called it, her voice a little hesitant, a tremor of vulnerability I’d come to recognize and, frankly, cherish.

The doorbell chimed, a soft, melodic sound that cut through the silence. My heart gave a peculiar lurch, a feeling entirely alien to the calculated rhythm of my professional life. I smoothed down my tie, a gesture of nervous habit I hadn't indulged in years. This wasn't a negotiation; it was something far more delicate, far more significant.
