The air in Amelia’s apartment was thick with a quiet sort of warmth, a stark contrast to the sterile efficiency of my corner office. Sunlight, filtered through the lace curtains, painted shifting patterns on the worn, comfortable rug. Leo was asleep on the sofa, a small, peaceful island amidst the gentle chaos of toys and books. Amelia sat across from me, a mug of tea cradled in her hands, her gaze steady but laced with a vulnerability I hadn't seen before. It was in this quiet space, away from the demands of the city and the expectations of my world, that the last vestiges of my carefully constructed distance began to crumble.
“I… I wanted to understand, Amelia,” I began, my voice softer than I’d intended. “About Leo. About… everything.” I gestured vaguely, feeling clumsy and inadequate. My usual command of language, the sharp precision I employed in negotiations, deserted me here.
She offered a small, sad smile. “There’s not much to tell, Ethan. He came into my life, and he needed me. That’s all there really is.”
