The crisp autumn air, usually a bracing reminder of my own focused trajectory, now felt like a warm embrace, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and something far more potent – the promise of a life I hadn't dared to envision. It was a Saturday, a day that once belonged solely to strategizing and closing deals, but now, it was punctuated by the joyful chaos of a child’s laughter. Leo, all of seven years and a constellation of freckles, was attempting to build a magnificent, albeit wobbly, fort in the living room. Amelia, her brow furrowed in mock seriousness as she supervised his architectural endeavors, looked utterly radiant.
“No, no, Leo,” she’d chided gently, her voice a melody that had become the soundtrack to my days. “The roof needs to be stronger. What if a dragon tries to sneak in?”
Leo, his tongue poking out in concentration, had nodded sagely. “Then we’ll need more blankets, Mama.”
