Chapter 13
Facing the Past Together
Leo experiences a moment of vulnerability, perhaps triggered by a memory. Amelia comforts him, and Ethan witnesses this, understanding the depth of his love and his commitment.
The late afternoon sun, usually a welcome visitor in my penthouse, felt almost intrusive tonight. It cast long, distorted shadows across the polished wood floors, mirroring the way my own thoughts had begun to warp and twist. I was supposed to be reviewing quarterly reports, a task that usually brought a sense of order and control, but my focus kept drifting. Drifting to Amelia, to Leo, to the quiet, powerful hum of their lives that had somehow woven themselves into the fabric of mine.
I’d been watching them from my office window, a usual habit when I needed a moment of quiet contemplation. They were in the small park across the street, Leo’s bright red ball arcing through the air with a joyful abandon that made Amelia laugh. Amelia, ever attuned, knelt beside him immediately. Her voice, a soft murmur that I couldn’t quite decipher from this distance, was a balm. She didn’t fuss, didn’t demand an explanation. She simply was there, her presence a quiet anchor. He leaned into her, his face buried in her shoulder, his small form trembling. It wasn’t the boisterous cry of a scraped knee or a lost toy. This was a deeper ache, a quiet sorrow that resonated with a primal instinct I hadn't known I possessed.
