The polished mahogany of Marcus Jones’s desk gleamed under the soft, indirect lighting of his study. It was a space designed for power, for the quiet contemplation that preceded decisive action, and for the meticulous management of an empire. Books lined the walls, not for leisure, but for reference – case studies, financial reports, biographies of men who had built fortunes from nothing. It was a testament to his own ascent, a climb he viewed with a fierce, almost primal pride. He ran a hand over the smooth, cool surface of the desk, a familiar gesture that spoke of ownership, of control.

Chloe entered softly, a tray bearing two steaming mugs of Earl Grey tea in her hands. The scent, delicate and fragrant, did little to soften the hard edges of the room, or of Marcus himself. He seemed carved from the very wood of his furniture, unyielding and polished to a high sheen.

“Darling,” Chloe began, her voice a gentle counterpoint to the room’s austerity, setting the tray down on a small side table. “I’ve been thinking about Emma.”
