The Robot's Smile
Returned home, Emma is a shadow of her former self. Obedient and emotionless, she moves through the mansion like a programmed doll, her true feelings buried deep within.
The heavy oak door swung shut with a soft thud, a sound that echoed the finality of Emma’s return. It wasn’t the grand entrance a returning daughter might expect, nor the tearful reunion she might have once dreamed of. Instead, it was a quiet, almost apologetic closing, as if the house itself was trying to absorb the change in her, to smooth over the rough edges that had been so painstakingly smoothed out elsewhere. She stood in the opulent foyer, the polished marble cool beneath her sensible shoes, and the familiar scent of beeswax and old money filled her lungs. It was the smell of home, yet it felt alien, a scent clinging to a life that was no longer hers to inhabit.
Her gaze swept over the familiar grandeur – the sweeping staircase, the antique grandfather clock ticking with unwavering precision, the portraits of stern-faced ancestors lining the walls. These were the elements that had once filled her with a dizzying sense of wonder, the trappings of a life she had been so desperate to belong to. Now, they were merely… present. Like the air she breathed, like the muted hum of the house’s unseen systems, they were simply there, and she was simply here.
“Emma, darling, you’re back.” Chloe Jones’s voice, usually a warm melody, held a careful note of relief, tinged with an almost imperceptible tremor. She emerged from the drawing-room, her smile a little too bright, her eyes scanning Emma with an intensity that bordered on apprehension. Chloe, always the observer, had been the first to notice the subtle shift in her daughter, the quiet withdrawal that had followed the… incident.
