Chapter 4
Echoes of Silence
Deemed unstable, Emma is confined to a mental asylum. The vibrant girl is systematically broken, her spirit dulled by isolation and the cruel reality of her situation.
The sterile white walls of her room seemed to absorb every sound, every hint of life. Emma sat on the edge of her narrow bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, a posture of enforced stillness. Dr. Albright’s voice, a smooth, practiced cadence, echoed in her memory. “We’re here to help you, Emma. To help you find your way back to a place of peace.” Peace. They told her she was unwell. They said the things she’d seen, the memories that flickered at the edges of her consciousness, were figments of a troubled mind. The whispers of a different life, a life of opulence and expectation, were dismissed as delusions. And so, Emma, the girl who had always strived to please, to be good, to be *unproblematic*, began to comply.
