Chloe traced the faded ink on the hospital discharge papers, her brow furrowed in concentration. The sterile scent of the old documents, stored away in a forgotten corner of the attic, did little to soothe the growing unease in her heart. It had been years since Emma had returned, years since the doctor had pronounced her ‘cured,’ her mind reset, her spirit subdued into a quiet obedience that felt more like an absence than a recovery. But something about the records, the neat, precise handwriting detailing Emma’s ‘treatment,’ felt… off.

She’d stumbled upon them while looking for old photo albums, a wistful yearning to revisit a time before the shadows had crept into her daughter’s eyes. The initial excitement of Emma’s return had been quickly overshadowed by the unsettling change in her. The bright, inquisitive girl she remembered was gone, replaced by a placid automaton who followed instructions with unnerving precision, her gaze often distant, as if her true self was locked away behind an impenetrable wall. Chloe had tried to break through, to coax a spark of the old Emma back, but it was like speaking to a polished mirror – reflections, but no depth.

Her husband, Marcus, had been so relieved, so quick to accept the doctor’s diagnosis and the prescribed course of ‘therapy.’ He’d called it a miracle, a second chance. But Chloe, a mother’s intuition a constant hum beneath her skin, had never been entirely convinced. There was a hollowness to Emma’s recovery, a too-perfect alignment with the narrative her adoptive sister, Emmy, had so carefully constructed.
