A Crack in the Facade

The sterile white walls of the mental asylum had become Emma’s entire world. For what felt like an eternity, her days had been a monotonous cycle of prescribed medication, bland meals, and the unnerving quiet that settled over the institution like a shroud. The once vibrant girl who had dreamt of open fields and the scent of rain on dry earth was now a ghost haunting her own body, her emotions carefully cataloged and suppressed. Her parents, Chloe and Marcus Jones, had brought her here after her return from the village, citing her distress and erratic behavior. But Emma knew the truth: Emmy, her adoptive sister, had orchestrated it all with a chillingly effective performance of concern.

Emmy, with her bright eyes and a smile that could charm the birds from the trees, had painted Emma as unstable, a danger to herself and the family. And the desperate parents, blinded by their own anxieties and perhaps a touch of guilt for their perceived failings, had believed her. They’d sent Emma away, and in her place, Emmy had flourished, basking in the attention and affection that had once been Emma’s birthright, however unwillingly received.

Emma, however, had learned to play the part. The medication dulled the sharp edges of her pain, and the oppressive atmosphere of the asylum had a way of sanding down any lingering sparks of defiance. She ate what she was given, took what she was told, and responded with a calm, vacant politeness that satisfied her doctors and, more importantly, her visiting parents. Chloe, her adoptive mother, would sometimes look at her with a flicker of something unreadable in her warm eyes – pity, perhaps, or a dawning regret. Marcus, her adoptive father, was always more businesslike, his visits brief, his questions focused on her “progress” and her readiness to “rejoin society.”
