Chapter 6
The Orphan's Gambit
In a crowded market, Anya meets Elara, a quick-witted orphan. Initially wary, Elara is drawn to Anya's genuine kindness and offers her knowledge of the city's underbelly.
The stench of dried fish and unwashed bodies clung to the air like a damp shroud, a stark contrast to the perfumed halls Anya had known. The marketplace was a riot of colour and noise, a cacophony of hawkers shouting their wares, the bleating of penned sheep, and the distant clang of a blacksmith’s hammer. Anya, cloaked and with her hood pulled low, felt like a fragile porcelain doll dropped into a potter’s rough workshop. Every jostle, every shouted word, sent a tremor of fear through her. She clutched the worn pouch of coins – her meager inheritance from a life that now seemed impossibly distant – tighter.
Her guardian, a gruff man named Kael, had warned her to stay close, to blend in, to speak to no one. But the sheer press of humanity was overwhelming, and a sudden surge in the crowd separated her from him. Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at her. She spun around, her eyes darting, searching for his familiar, stern face. He was nowhere.
“Lost, little dove?” a voice, raspy as dry leaves, slithered from the shadows of a stall piled high with dubious-looking trinkets.
