The air in Oakhaven was thick with the scent of woodsmoke, damp earth, and something else, something Anya couldn’t quite place. It was a far cry from the perfumed stillness of the palace gardens, a scent that clung to her like a second skin. Kael had guided her through the dense forest for what felt like days, his silent presence a constant, albeit unsettling, reassurance. Now, they stood on the edge of a bustling town, a riot of noise and activity that made Anya’s head spin.

From her sheltered vantage point within the palace walls, Anya had imagined towns to be quaint, picturesque places, filled with cheerful merchants hawking their wares and happy villagers going about their simple lives. Oakhaven was none of those things. The buildings, crammed together as if for warmth, sagged under the weight of neglect. Many were little more than hovels, their thatched roofs patched with whatever scraps could be found. The streets, unpaved and muddy, teemed with a throng of people whose faces were etched with a weariness Anya had never witnessed before.

Their clothes were drab and patched, their movements hurried and purposeful, their eyes downcast. There was no laughter, no idle chatter, only the urgent murmur of survival. Anya clutched the rough wool of Kael’s cloak, feeling a strange mixture of fascination and fear. This was the world her father had ruled, the kingdom she was supposedly heir to, and it was nothing like the gilded fantasy she had inhabited.
