Chapter 4
Shadows in the Forest
Lost and terrified, Anya stumbles through a dark forest. She encounters Kael, a gruff stranger who seems to know more about her than he lets on, offering reluctant aid.
The branches clawed at Anya's tattered gown, each snag a fresh reminder of her desperate flight. The moon, a sliver of bone in the ink-black sky, offered scant illumination, leaving the forest floor a tapestry of shifting shadows and unseen obstacles. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a fresh wave of icy dread through her. She was lost. Utterly, terrifyingly lost. The opulent halls of her home, the familiar scent of lavender and polished wood, felt like a dream from another lifetime, a life stolen by the swift, brutal hand of betrayal.
Her breath hitched, a ragged sound swallowed by the oppressive silence. Tears, hot and useless, traced paths through the grime on her cheeks. She was no longer Princess Anya, the sheltered girl who spent her days with embroidery and tutors. She was a fugitive, a nameless shadow fleeing an enemy she couldn't comprehend. The faces of her parents, serene in their portraits, flashed behind her eyelids, a pang of unbearable loss twisting in her gut. Had they known? Had they foreseen this darkness?
A sudden, sharp crack nearby made her jump, her heart leaping into her throat. She stumbled, her ankle twisting on a gnarled root. A choked cry escaped her lips as pain shot up her leg. She fell heavily, the damp earth cold and unforgiving beneath her. For a moment, she lay there, the will to move draining from her like water from a sieve. What was the point? The forest seemed to press in on her, a suffocating embrace of the unknown.
