Chapter 13
The Scarred Hand's Secret
Anya notices Kael's distinctive scar. He finally reveals his deep, personal connection to her family, explaining his unwavering dedication to her cause.
The chill of the pre-dawn air did little to stir Anya from her uneasy slumber. Her dreams, as they often did, replayed fragments of a life she couldn't quite grasp – sun-drenched courtyards, the scent of blossoms she’d never smelled in her waking life, and a recurring image of a regal crest, a hawk in flight, etched onto something she couldn't quite make out. She stirred, a soft sigh escaping her lips as the familiar sensation of Kael’s watchful presence settled around her like a second cloak. He was always there, a silent sentinel, his gruff exterior a stark contrast to the unwavering vigilance in his eyes.
As the first hesitant rays of sunlight began to paint the eastern sky in hues of rose and gold, Anya found herself drawn to Kael, who sat by the dying embers of their campfire, his back to her. The worn leather of his tunic was familiar, as was the way his shoulders seemed to carry the weight of unspoken burdens. It was then, as he turned to acknowledge her stirring, that she saw it again, more clearly this time in the nascent light. A scar. A distinctive, jagged line that ran across the back of his left hand, disappearing beneath the cuff of his sleeve. It was a mark she’d glimpsed before, fleetingly, in moments of shared danger, but never with such clarity. A strange tremor ran through her, a sensation akin to recognizing a melody from a forgotten lullaby.
“You’re awake early,” Kael’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of its usual impatience. He didn’t ask if she slept well; he knew the answer was likely no.
