The air in the hidden glade grew heavy, not with the usual scent of damp earth and pine, but with a chilling anticipation. Anya, huddled closer to the crackling fire, felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. Kael, his gaze fixed on the darkened perimeter of their temporary sanctuary, shifted his weight, the leather of his tunic creaking softly. Elara, ever watchful, stirred the embers with a twig, her brow furrowed. They had been here for days, a fragile bubble of peace after the harrowing escape from the capital, but the gnawing sense of being pursued had never truly left them.

“They are closer,” Kael stated, his voice a low rumble that did little to soothe Anya’s jangling nerves. He didn’t need to elaborate. The hushed urgency in his tone, the way his hand instinctively rested on the hilt of his sword, spoke volumes. Valerius’s reach was long, disturbingly so.

Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs. Each rustle of leaves, each distant snap of a twig, felt like a drumbeat of doom. She remembered the terrified faces of the few loyalists who had helped them, the desperate pleas in their eyes as they’d urged her to run, to live. The memory was a sharp shard in her conscience. She was the reason they were in danger.
