The Maseka King, furious and deceived, forbids Tafara from pursuing Tariro. He demands loyalty and obedience, threatening to disown his son if he defies the royal decree and the kingdom's interests.

The weight of my father’s words settled upon me like a shroud, each syllable a stone added to the crushing burden already pressing down on my chest. “Forbidden,” he’d thundered, his voice echoing the fury that had consumed him when he’d learned of my transgression. “You have shamed the Maseka name, Tafara. You have courted a serpent from the Hungwe den, a viper who would poison our kingdom with her very presence.”

I stood before him, my head bowed, though my spirit warred within me. The opulent throne room, usually a place of quiet dignity, now felt like a cage, its gilded bars pressing in. Sunlight, filtering through the intricately carved windows, cast patterns on the polished stone floor, mocking the darkness that had descended upon my world. My father, the Maseka King, sat upon his throne, his face a mask of regal displeasure, his eyes, usually filled with a benevolent warmth, now burned with a righteous anger. Beside him, my mother, Queen Nandi, her face etched with concern, offered a silent plea for understanding, but even her presence seemed to lend strength to his decree.

“She is not a serpent, Father,” I managed to say, my voice barely a whisper, yet it carried the tremor of defiance. “She is… Tariro. And she is the only one I have ever loved.”
