The silence that descended upon my chambers was a suffocating shroud, heavier than any royal tapestry, colder than the deepest mountain snow. Tariro was gone. The words echoed in the cavernous emptiness of my heart, each syllable a jagged shard tearing at my soul. Gone. Vanished. Like a wisp of smoke on a tempestuous wind, leaving behind only the acrid scent of despair and the chilling realization of my own impotence.

I paced the polished stone floors, each step a thunderous accusation against the stillness. My hands, once steady enough to guide a warhorse or wield a ceremonial spear, now trembled with a frantic energy, seeking solace in the solid, unyielding surfaces of my kingdom, a kingdom that suddenly felt hollow, stripped of its color, its very essence. The jewels embedded in the walls, once glinting with a cheerful warmth, now seemed to mock me with their cold, impassive light. The silks that draped my bed, usually a comfort, felt rough and alien against my skin.

How could this happen? How could she, my radiant Tariro, be so cruelly snatched from my side? The betrayal, sharp and sudden, still stung. The whispers, the accusations, the fear that had rippled through the night – it all coalesced into a single, agonizing truth: I had failed her. I, Tafara, prince of the Maseka, had let the darkness swallow the brightest star in my sky.
